Dear Readers,
Your faithful cosmic weather scribe has been hijacked by Mercury...
In my birth chart, both the Sun and Moon are in Gemini. As I child, I was always in trouble for dawdling. Perennially enchanted (and distracted) by birds, flowers and falling leaves, I’ve been told by more than one therapist over the years that if I were a child today, I would more than likely have an ADHD diagnosis.
With five planets in Gemini as of 1:36am this morning, the effort to focus our attention is real. Again, we have so much happening in the sky that I could write for days, but in an effort at discernment and containment, I’m intending to keep my attention from chasing metaphorical butterflies and make this relatively brief and readable.
Mercury is the fastest moving planet in our solar system. In astrology he rules the processes of cognition, communication, and exchange; mediating the learning and sharing of information. As the natural ruler of Gemini, his arrival on Monday gave us four planets in this curious, playful, sociable and a bit flighty and flirty air sign. I truly meant to write this yesterday, but life had other plans and the speed of their unfolding had me almost breathless.
But let me back up a little. I last wrote as Venus and Jupiter were together at the very end of Taurus, just as both were about to follow the Sun into Gemini; Venus for a brief moment of just under a month, but Jupiter for slightly more than a year—no small matter. With both Mercury and the Moon there now, the Gemini flavor of time is strongly highlighted, and for those with significant Gemini placements, including me… well… see my experience above.
Looking at the chart for this evening as it speaks to this week as a whole, we find Pluto in Aquarius at almost 2° in a trine with Jupiter and Mercury in the early degrees of Gemini, and Saturn at almost 19° Pisces in a square with the Sun and Venus. At the time of the New Moon tomorrow, Saturn will be square to the Sun, Moon and Venus.
This past Monday, and continuing to be palpable through the rest of the week, Venus was and is within a degree of the Sun… She’s cazimi—in the heart of the Sun, going through a rebirth process, from which she will emerge re-enlivened and lit up. Jupiter did this a few weeks ago and Mercury will have his turn later this month. We also have a New Moon tomorrow—the monthly meetup of the Sun and Moon, from which the Moon emerges also newly baptized by the Sun.
I love the word cazimi. To me, it sounds as though it should be accompanied by a blast of trumpets. But all of these are quiet new beginnings. As each of these planets conjoins the Sun and emerges on the other side, it’s invisible to us. What internal seeds are we planting with our intentions around this time, particularly Gemini related? We can expect to notice the first sprouts of these when these planets emerge from under the Sun’s beams. This generally happens once they’re 10°- 15° from the Sun. For Jupiter, it will be later this month when he appears as a morning star. For Venus, she’ll appear on the Western horizon as a dazzling evening star in mid-late July.
Yesterday, I awakened to a WhatsApp message from one of my kids with a photograph sent from far away… an engagement announcement! (Yes, it’s very exciting—but also illustrative of my point). Gemini is my fifth house—the house associated with children. And there we find Venus cazimi—the rebirth of the goddess of love. At the time of the message, Mercury was conjunct Jupiter, signifying big, good news in the same part of the chart … check and check!
If you know your chart, take note of where Gemini is because with all these transits, this area of life is likely to be lit up.
The thing about all this action in Gemini, and particularly with Jupiter there for the next year, is that we’ll all have to be mindful of overextension. Ideas, projects, conversations, data, data and more data. It will be easy to lose the forest for the trees and get completely side-tracked. This brings me to Saturn squaring the New Moon.
Saturn, big daddy of the planets, wants us to step up and into our authority and maturity. Squaring the New Moon and Venus now, and later Mercury and Jupiter, Saturn will ask us to slow down and be discerning. He’ll provide a check on the Gemini tendency to spread ourselves too thin. Those distinctive rings? Think about containment. If we’re discerning and wise about our choices, Saturn provides a container for the energy of our ideas. Structure, discipline, boundaries, patience and limits are Saturnian concepts. If we allow the containment, we have a much better chance of following through on one, or even a few of our brilliant Mercurial ideas.
Finally there’s Pluto, moving ever so slowly retrograde in the early degrees of Aquarius. He’s a factor every time a planet changes signs now. He’ll move back into Capricorn briefly in late summer, but for the most part, his gravitas is waiting for each planet as it arrives in a new sign.
Aquarius has a trine relationship to Gemini. There’s a smooth flow of energy between the two. Yesterday, when Mercury and Jupiter were exactly conjunct and trine Pluto, I received great news, but it wasn’t lightweight. A decision to marry is a weighty decision. It comes with obligations and consequences. It’s transformative—the hallmark of Pluto.
This coming weekend, Saturn will exactly square first Venus then the Sun. It’s as if Venus will emerge from the throne room of the Sun to immediately face her first challenges as the newly reborn goddess. We might feel this in our relationships or aesthetic endeavors. A square between Venus and Saturn can feel like a wet blanket on our desires and a test of our values. Likewise, a square between the Sun and Saturn can feel like a dampening of our enthusiasm or vitality—like a bushel basket thrown over our light. But we must keep the faith. Venus, Jupiter and the Moon were indeed reborn, and while Saturn may test us, in the long run those tests only serve to strengthen our ability to shine our light in the face of challenge. Isn’t that what the world needs now… more of us willing to shine our light in the face of darkness?
If you’d like to explore how all of this Gemini influence might be at play in your life, how Jupiter in Gemini has made his presence known through past transits or perhaps learn more about how the astrology of this year is likely to land in relation to you personally, I, like my patron Mercury would be delighted to serve as your guide to the star map known as your birth chart.
